Rathen: Into Bramblewood Forest (The Rathen Series Book 2)

If you read the first book in this series, you know what to expect from the second book. If you have not, this is still an accessible novel that you could pick up and enjoy without having read the first one (though that would obviously be helpful).
This is your basic fantasy novel—a group of dudes banding together to save the world from the evil that lurks and is growing in power. That is not a knock on the book. I love fantasy and this one is really well-written. The characters are engaging and the story is interesting. The band that gathers together are each unique and not all of them have the same motivation for joining the group on this world-saving adventure. This makes it different than many other fantasy, travel adventures.
As most fantasy novels do, this one owes a lot to The Lord of the Rings. It also has some flavors of the Wheel of Time and the Kingkiller Chronicles series. It never reaches those heights but it comes close at times.
The world feels lived-in and comfortable. By that I mean it is not an awkward fantasy novel bogged down by its own mythology but contains just enough magic and mythology to make it feel like a “real” place.
If you love fantasy, then this book is a must-read. Pick up the first one and start there. If you are anxious and just want a fun read, feel free to pick this one up and start from here (though I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that—you will enjoy it and have to go back and read the first one anyway).
