Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Russia by Richard Hume is a collection of his written essays about the history of rock and roll, some of the historically important, but sometimes forgotten, figures in rock and roll, and the Russian rock and roll scene—both historically and in the present day.
I love rock music and history so this was a really fun read for me. Mr. Hume is a great story teller and it is obvious he has a genuine passion for music and for his adopted country. I especially enjoyed the attention spent on the history and role of women in the history of rock. This is an especially overlooked aspect of rock history that is covered in more detail in this book than in most others.
I have read several books on the history of rock and been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum a few times so I thought I knew a lot about the topic. While some of the stories in the book were familiar, much of it was not. It held my interest from beginning to end. It covers stories and anecdotes not found in any other books I have read and adds a depth and character to the history of rock I haven’t before experienced.
Overall, if you enjoy rock and roll, I would not hesitate to recommend that you pick this one up. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!
I received a free, no-strings-attached, advanced reader’s copy of this book.
