Canticle of the Spear

Canticle of the Spear is a really fun fantasy read. It is the classic tale of good versus evil, light versus dark, and two worlds, metaphorically at least, colliding and fighting for survival.
I enjoyed the way the world building in this novel. Some fantasy novels can quickly take you out of the story by bogging the reader down with the mundane intricacies of how the world functions rather than reveal that through the story and characters. In this novel, the world serves as another character and is fully developed and a significant contributor to the story instead of a hinderance.
The characters are well written and don’t feel like cardboard. You find yourself rooting for or against characters very quickly and they feel like old friends by the end of the book. The dialog is not stiff or forced and feels natural.
In other words, it is a well-written book. Beyond being fundamentally well-written, it is also a really fun story. I loved the premise and the way it is carried out in unexpected ways throughout the story was simply a delight. It is thrilling and exciting and fun and everything you want when you sit down to read a fantasy novel. It has a little something for every reader who picks it up.
Overall, if you enjoy good fiction, and especially if you enjoy good fantasy, then you should definitely pick this book up and give it a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.
